About The Blog (and Me)

About me

Part-time Baker. Indian. For the many years, I have never been able to satisfactorily answer the question "Tell me about yourself", but for once, I am going to try (and please do forgive me, if I wander off into vagueness)

I grew up across India because of my Dad's job. I went to more schools than I care to count, but I cannot regret that. It's a rare experience, to study in different regions, to absorb their culture. I now live, blog, bake, work from the Oxford of the East, eighth largest metropolis in India, earstwhile Punyanagari - Pune.  I was once a Biology student, with dreams of working in a white lab coat and an AC lab. That has now changed to a striped apron and a baking hot kitchen, but I am not complaining.

I like to spend more time in the kitchen than I’d spend time doing anything else. Including partying (which probably makes me a very peculiar twenty-something adult, but who cares?) The only thing that can compete (and fiercely at that) with cooking is travelling.

My love for baking grew out of years of watching my Mom and her friends and collegues cook for fairs and potlucks. And we have lived in some never-heard-of-before, yet-endlessly-charming small towns of India, so whatever Mom made was nothing short of magic.

I am not a 'baking' purist (I only like to believe that I am) and I have been known to use ready-mixes more than once (and mind, you heard that from me first).  I trudge the length and breadth of the web and read about food, find new recipes (although I may try them years from now, when I actually get the ingredients) and all that stuff that makes the Web, well the web (I get caught in it too often).

(I guess I also like to put a lot of my thoughts in parenthesis)

The Blog

It all started way back in 2008. It was monsoon, and I was a novice in B-school. We had to traipse around the city in a sari and heels(which is, to put it mildly, not easy). This blog was started as the result of that particular academic assignment and I had all of 30 minutes (and a very shaky internet connection). I had about 5 minutes to come up with a title. Chocolate Coffee Cream seemed to rhyme.

I had renamed it Dark Chocolate and the Globetrekker for a while and I still love that name. You never know, I might still change it back!

That said, I had no real intentions of continuing. Yes I like to bake. Yes, I like to cook. Yes, I also like to write. But honestly this blog was never about combining the two. It took a lot of prodding from my parents to update it. Sometime in 2010, I realised what it was about. It’s about me and my exploits with baking. It’s about me trying to learn from others. It's about my thoughts and my space on the internet. It’s about what I see when I travel. It’s about me trying to tell the world that when someone utters the word ‘bake’ it does not immediately mean icing covered dry cakes.

I would welcome your suggestions, anything you feel will make your visit to the blog an even better experience. See my Recipes and Links page, you can get a lot of stuff from there too.

Cheers and Bon Appétit!
